The number of town centre cafes and restaurants in Bishop Auckland is less than half that in Barnard Castle, and less than a third of Durham City Centre, both popular visitor locations. This project aims to strengthen the visitor economy in Bishop Auckland by encouraging people to stay longer in the town centre and increase expenditure with businesses.
Through the Future High Street Fund, proposals are in place to encourage on-street dining, which enhances opportunities to increase and improve the food and beverage offer available to residents and visitors to Bishop Auckland by providing an on-street ‘cafe culture’ feel around the Market Place.
There will also be a drinking water fountain placed within the Market Place along the route of ‘Way of Life ‘ trail to provide refreshment to those travelling to the town on foot or by cycle via the heritage walking and cycling routes.
The suite of proposals will drive footfall and create a year round economy for the town’s businesses. It will help drive changes in the quality of the town centre uses that visitors expect and will link residents to the advantages a successful visitor economy offers.
