Property Reuse Fund

Future High Street Fund

Due to a high number of vacant units within the town centre, the Property Reuse Scheme is a grant which has been introduced to help individuals and business owners bring the unused spaces back into use.

The Property Reuse Scheme has already helped a number of businesses within the town centre to bring vacant buildings back to life.

The fund is available to developers who are able to match the grant with their own investment and the allocation of funding is made following an application from either the landlord or tenant of the property.

The benefit of the scheme is that once a vacant unit is brought back into economic use whether that be a retail or hospitality space or overnight accommodation provision, this will create employment opportunities and enhance the social infrastructure within the town centre which will increase footfall and generate income into the town centres.

Many applications have been received for the Property Reuse Scheme and unfortunately not all applications will be successful due to the grant available. However, there is a possibility that a second round of the Property Reuse Scheme may be available soon to further assist business and building owners in Bishop Auckland.

The most recent Property Reuse Fund project to be completed is Scope situated on Newgate Street.

Sally Hutchinson, Area Manager, Scope Retail, said, “We’re delighted to be involved in Durham Council’s regeneration programme. We believe it will make Bishop Auckland an amazing destination for everyone to meet up with friends and family, shop and enjoy all the amenities the town will offer.

“The Property Reuse Fund has helped us to create a truly stunning and dynamic environment. Our colleagues and volunteers are incredibly excited to be getting back to serving the community.

“Our research tells us that since the cost of living crisis, more people than ever are discovering the value, variety and sense of community to be found at charity shops and Scope offers all of that and so much more. We pride ourselves in training our volunteers so they can get vital work experience in a safe, friendly and fun environment.

“If you’d like to learn new skills, make friends or simply get out of the house, we’d love you to join our team of volunteers. Please drop into Scope and have a chat with our team, they’ll be very happy to discuss the role with you.”
